choose wisely this day…. what you put on your skin.

Sisters, you would be shocked to learn that the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) does not do pre-market approval of all personal care products. A very small approval process exists, but this deals with over-the-counter color additives.

According to the Office of Cosmetics and Colors at the federal Food and Drug Administration, “…a cosmetic manufacturer may use almost any raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product without an approval from FDA.” (FDA 2012)

I think this is very scary. Should we not be concerned?

It’s been estimated that the average woman uses approximately 9-12 personal care products a day. (Think: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, soap, lip-balm, lotion, hand cream, etc.) These every day common products can contain upwards of 168 different damaging and dangerous chemicals.

I am a firm believer that what we put on our skin should be as clean & healthy as what we eat.

Why?

Because what we put on our skin – enters the blood stream and can change cell structure. Even in tiny amounts, many of the chemicals can have a tremendous health and hormonal impact. Just think about nicotine and birth control patches. These are administered through the skin from a patch into our bloodstream, so that we can forgo taking a pill.

While it’s difficult to fully understand the amount of absorption of chemicals via the skin, it is always good to question what you put on your skin. And to choose wisely!
